ABSTRACT

The fractal-like patterns of behaviour reinforce leadership role models. In experience these qualities are not shared in equal measure by all leaders and support is often needed. Also, taking a step back and seeing things from a different perspective is difficult when someone are close to the team, part of and perpetuating the existing team culture. The wider organisation culture can provide another filter to awareness and responsibility. The anthropologist Ralph Linton is reputed to have made the observation that the last thing a fish would ever notice would be water because it is surrounded by it. High-performing teams need support at times when significant changes in context occur. The coach and facilitator can help teams agree on joint commitments and plans that form the basis of ongoing development work, action and review. The command and control style of leadership relies on individual management with information being controlled at different levels of the hierarchy.
