ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the steps that we can take to improve the key working relationships. If individuals and their stakeholders do the review and discuss the results together, then they already are making good progress. The chapter looks at the different ways we can help individuals improve their self-awareness and personal efficacy in relationships. These includes: getting feedback from others and through personality questionnaires; the signs of too much control; ego balance; understanding defensive patterns of behaviour; increasing self-confidence; and attitudes to change. The idea of getting feedback in an organisation context has a long history dating back to the invention of the steam engine speed 'governor' in the late eighteenth century. By taking responsibility for ourselves in a relationship, and increasing our adaptability and flexibility of response, we can change the context for the relationship and improve it. Increasing awareness and emotional intelligence helps us to empathise with others and respond appropriately in different circumstances.
