There are many personal development books around that can help individuals with this kind of thinking and to put it into a broader life context. Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a popular technique in business for helping people to create a more powerful future. Peter Senge in his seminal work The Fifth Discipline addresses the importance of this 'personal mastery' for a learning organisation. New or changed relationships are a lot less scary if someone feel confident in our identity and do not fear being overly influenced, taken in or losing ourselves in the conversation. Self-confidence is important for building and maintaining relationships. If individuals have worked through the key stakeholder relationship survey, started with what they need to change first and developed a personal operating framework, then they will more than likely start to have a different kind of conversation with key stakeholders.
