ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the internal drivers and outlines a classification of: organizational resources and the business processes by which they are converted into products and services, giving examples of each type. The chapter offers some guidance as to appropriate sources for each of the descriptive categories. It also briefly explores how a firm can amplify its resources and often improve its operational efficiency through alliances with other businesses and organizations. An obvious form of corporate knowledge is to know how' of its people, often described as tacit knowledge. Company literature and statements by chief executives routinely state that our people are our prime asset'. Assessing the resources available to a company is a crucial element in understanding its behaviour and future potentialities. A similar appraisal of the efficiency, strengths and weaknesses of its operational performance is also a vital analytical requirement.
