ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the general analytical approaches to consumption and discusses from the perspective of how challenged consumption in the food area is handled in everyday life. It also discusses the cultural approach has been influential in the sociology of consumption and consumer culture studies since the beginning of the 1980s. Social constructivism directs analysis towards the potential instability and multiplicity of social categories and dynamics. Social life is understood as primarily connected to sense-making processes. The sociologist Andreas Reckwitzmost strongly positions practice theory in relation to other grand theoretical ideal types of positions within cultural theory. Phenomenological studies are often preoccupied with analysing social actors' intentional interpretations of meaning in their life experiences. The chapter explains the practice theoretical approach as a distinct perspective for empirical analysis.
