ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book has laid out a strategic process that sits uneasily with the model of capitalism which is widely championed in the business literature. Business has always been a strong force in the economy and has huge influence in society. Corporations have become adept at persuading people how they should live their lives to grow the market for the corporation's products and services. This apparently successful focus on consumer capitalism is leading the world into an uncertain future of resource limits and environmental degradation. Business's ability to respond is hampered by government regulation and investor's myopic focus on profits. The twenty-first century corporate challenge is to reconnect business with society, make regulation less necessary and set business free to serve society. Resurgence is needed in commercial realism and common sense to push back against the incestuous drive to increase shareholder value.
