ABSTRACT

Delegation within the project context refers to delegating overall responsibility for the delivery of a work package (WP). Accountability implies holding someone as directly accountable for certain results, be they results from a delegated delivery. Delegation and accountability works in similar ways in both masculine and feminine cultures. Employees in masculine culture are even happier to be delegated a job even if it does not fully fit their skills and capabilities. A project manager can therefore expect more zeal for delegation in a masculine culture, but must also be aware that such zeal may not be justified. Regardless of the tendency for higher PDI cultures to delegate less than lower PDI cultures, someone has to make the decisions on what to delegate and be accountable for it. Collective cultures share both rewards and punishment as a group and not as individuals. In an individualistic culture such delegation is automatically taken as the responsibility of the lead engineer.
