ABSTRACT

Uncertainty Avoidance Index (UAI) can be defined as the degree to which members of a group experience discomfort or anxiety towards ambiguity. The risk is deciding to face the uncertainty. The risk is that we will fail in the face of uncertainty. Slovenians, belonging as they do to a high uncertainty avoidant society, aim to provide as much clarity around expectations as they believe is possible. Shane's research suggests that rates of innovation are predominately influenced by weak uncertainty avoidance. He also suggested that weak power distance and strong individualism are also linked to higher innovation. Anthropologists and social psychologists have searched for a link between historical instability and uncertainty avoidance. Geert Hofstede, having searched for a correlation between uncertainty avoidance and power distance. Paradoxically, some uncertainty avoidant cultures tend to rate higher on risk facing than lower uncertainty avoidant cultures. High uncertainty avoidant cultures experience higher anxiety in the face of ambiguity.
