ABSTRACT

Social media is merely the most prominent market in which Identity Capital is paramount. This trend is clearly in conflict with some of the principles of data protection that many westernised societies adhere to. How this conflict plays out and whether social media will need to adapt to meet data protection requirements, or whether the opposite will happen, is one of the most interesting topics in cyber security, but for the time being many threat actors view Web 2.0 data sets and users as prime targets. InterWeb 2.0 users are both creators and consumers of content. Social media sites like Facebook, Blogs, Wikis and countless other tools put the power to publish into the hands of consumers. Corporate espionage is a growth sector and corporate spies use social media to target the employees of competing firms. Personal security risks include cases where employees give out personal details online, such as those reportedly given out to burglars.
