ABSTRACT

Social media marketing is a new discipline. It is not yet generally recognised as a major issue for cyber security. Social media risk is the risk of people causing damage to the organisation on social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. Reputational damage can also happen when weak control of access to corporate social media accounts means that malicious or mischievous employees can post inappropriate content without fear of discovery. Single sign-on systems can help prevent the type of accident. But education is also important for managing social media risk. Social media can cause damage to company assets. There is a risk to share price from a badly handled social media incident. In addition companies that read social media profiles of potential recruits have been accused of discrimination. Wasted investments can be made when badly thought-out social media campaigns are launched at the expense of more efficient campaigns in other more traditional channels.
