ABSTRACT

This chapter explains cyber threats and the research in context and continues with promoting a holistic view of security. One area of concern which has already been highlighted is the dearth of skilled people able to deal with cyber attacks and cyber related problems. However, it is not possible to provide an accurate picture of the problem because cyber crime carried out both against individuals and indeed against corporations is not fully reported and any figures supplied are likely to underestimate the problem. Owing to the fact that a cyber attack can be launched from any part of the world at any time, it is clear that governments and international institutions need to work more closely together, first to raise public awareness and second, to put in place more effective counter-attack measures. Cyber security needs to be thought of internationally and crisis management is usually confined or limited to being regional or national.
