ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 is dedicated to the key role of daylight in the understanding, usage, and maintenance of heritage sites, adaptive re-use of buildings, and protection of historic artefacts; a review of different daylight studies is provided. Building on the historical review in Chapter 1 and the knowledge of daylight physics in Chapter 3, this chapter addresses the role of daylight in accentuating the cultural identities of historic buildings and heritage sites. The authors argue that daylight should be better understood in conservation projects and the transformation of heritage sites into either open or closed museums. Examples are given of projects for adaptive re-use, conservation of heritage sites, and museums.
