ABSTRACT

This chapter contains the extent to which crime prevention can be embedded in design. Designers can work with local authorities to develop a vision for cities in the future that are truly 'livable' by providing insight into human feelings, emotions and experience. The Future Cities project is using Information and Communications Technology to address a range of issues in Glasgow, some of which are related to crime and safety. Safety and security principles are being applied to a range of designs and contexts, including residential dwellings, commercial properties, schools and transport hubs, ATMs, post offices and banks. Designers have an important role to play when it comes to 'socially engineering' behaviours that contribute to safety, security and quality of life for all groups. Technologies such as smartphones would ideally be designed to deter criminals from targeting the product. A European standard for urban design and planning has not become compulsory.
