ABSTRACT

This chapter provides situational crime approach, which include crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED). Crime has traditionally been dealt with by focusing on punishing the offender. The UK's punitive approach to crime and disorder has resulted in a relatively large prison population compared to other European countries. Problems of crime and insecurity in local neighbourhoods may lead to a demand for uniformed police officers. Crime prevention strategies intervene before a crime occurs to reduce the chances of an offence being committed. The urban environment has been the focus for crime prevention. Within the urban environment, crime, antisocial behaviour and insecurity are generally addressed using an approach termed CPTED. Design, planning and crime prevention policies play a key role in defining the extent to which architects consider safety and security for users of the buildings and environments they design.
