ABSTRACT

The third issue is about demonstrating and measuring design’s value-added impact on business. Henry Ford is reputed to have once said that it is the product not the business that pays the wages. At the heart of this profound statement was the realization that the product, and in today's world we would add the word ‘service’, generated the means to survive and succeed. It would seem that Henry Ford did not need to be persuaded about the role of design in his business. He could see that it needed to be the business engine, not money. He unashamedly put his product on a podium, and he knew his product could not exist without design.
