Ntheyear1630,atthecloseofthe whalingseasoninSpitsbergen,the EnglishshipssailedawayforEngland, negligentlyleavingbehindaboat's crew,whichincludedEdwardPellham andsevenothers.Thesamethinghad
happenedoncebefore,bythenegligenceofthesame captain,andalltheunfortunatederelictshaddied,sothat Pellhamandhiscompanionsregardedtheirowndestructionasassured.Buttheywerebravemen,andthey determinedtomakewhatresistancetheycouldtothedeath thatseemedsoinevitablyawaitingthem.TheyaccordinglywenttotheEnglishhutsatBellSound,atthe bottomoftheSchoonhoven(nowcalledRechercheBay),
andpreparedtowinterthere.Theymadeanexpedition toIceSoundtohuntreindeer,andtheycollectedthe remainsofthewhales,outofwhichthetrain-oilhad
