SpitsbergenhasbeenlongernavigatedbytheDutch thanGreenland,andsonamedafterthediscovererofthe country,1oronaccountofthemountainpeakswhichrise upbeforethosewhoapproachitfromthesea,thoughsome, itappears,callittheNewLand.Itliesin8oo3'N.latitude.Whetheritisanisland,orpartofacontinent,isstill unknown.Reindeer-or,rather,rein-calves-arefound there,veryhotbynature,havingtheshapeandsizeof acalf,andhornslikedeer,butveryroughandtender.If theyknockthem,theybleed.2Thepresutnptionisthatthere areindeedsomebushyspotsintheinteriorofthecountry, strayingwhence,intheirsearchforfood,theygetcutoffby thequantityofsnow,losetheirtrail,andapproachthe shore.3Itisalsoinhabitedbyfoxes,~omebirds,andsnow-
