Whenthey,-i.e.,thetwoshipsaforesaid-werecometo BearIsland,bytheNorthPole,74-!0 ,WillemBarentsz. wishedtosteereastwards,andJanCornelisz.westwards,to

avoidbeinglockedintheiceoffNovaZembla.But Barentsz.hadtofollowJanCornelisz.,hebeingtothewindward,asmaybeseeninthenarrativeofthevoyage.It seemsexpedient,foraclearunderstandingofthediscovery, thatIshouldhereinsertashortextractfromtheJournal, writtenbyWillemBarentsz.inhisownhand:-
