ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the definition of e-learning, delivery methods, technology, and characteristics of modern e-learning, specifically: the history of e-learning, including some problems of early computer-based training and how the Internet has revolutionized e-learning. Modern e-learning is characterized by training that is accessed via an intranet connection. The e-learning delivery method of training provides educational materials, computer-mediated communication (CMC), and the delivery of instructional content through electronic technology. The e-Learning is broken down into three broad categories: synchronous, asynchronous, and blended learning. Rather than delivering training via a PC, as is the case with e-learning, Mobile Learning (m-Learning) delivers training directly to the learner's handheld mobile device. The m-Learning attempts to capitalize on student familiarity with mobile technology, delivering training that has been specifically designed for use on wireless mobile devices (WMDs). The various characteristics, technologies, and delivery methods of e-learning will facilitate a continual increase in our ability to efficiently accomplish the learning objectives of pilot training programs.
