ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a brief introduction to instructional analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation (ADDIE) for e-learning in aviation. Instructional design (ID), also referred to as instructional system design (ISD), is a systematic process of analyzing the need for instruction, designing effective content, developing training based upon sound instructional principles, and evaluating the effect of the instruction. Although the ADDIE model is an umbrella term that does not offer specific ID guidance, it is a convenient and memorable framework within which specific details can be organized. The ID process for e-learning is very similar to that of traditional classroom instruction. In fact, the entire analysis phase is identical for both face-to-face (F2F) and online instruction. The goal of the implement phase is to deliver the e-learning to pilots. Summative evaluations take place after e-learning has been delivered to learners, and are used by training managers, instructional designers, and company decision-makers to assess the effectiveness and impact of training.
