ABSTRACT

Perception can be seen as the process of selecting, organizing, and interpreting information about situations in social and physical environments. People are organisms composed of physical and mental entities that function together to shape their environment and ensure their survival. To achieve the goal, they create mental constructs and properties that help them simplify data, create abstract representations, and use analytic and deductive logic to handle the information overflow that people receive from their senses. In literature, polychronic cultures are referred to as having non-linear perception of time while monochronic ones have more of a linear perception of time. In terms of negotiations, monochronic negotiators shouldn't be surprised or offended if their polychronic counterparts concurrently think of irrelevant issues while negotiating. High-context cultures require more than textual information in order to fully process messages, meaning that social cues like facial expressions and body language play a significant part in forming perceptions.
