ABSTRACT

Good command in finding, managing and minimising the recurrence of quick win opportunities not only saves energy, but also changes the energy baseline, the sizing and the capital required to implement other energy reduction projects. Installing correctly is crucial in energy reduction. The most common error involves installing variable speed drives (VSDs). The purpose of a VSD is to vary the speed of the motor to match the demands of the pump or fan. VSDs could be installed but do not generate energy reduction. Purified water in a pharmaceutical plant is distributed in close-loop pipe work to various end users and back to a storage tank. The distribution, operated 24 hours a day seven days a week, is controlled by a variable-speed driven pump operated at 50 Hz. A model was developed to assess the energy saving scenarios for reducing the number of start ups and to reduce the operating steam pressure.
