ABSTRACT

This chapter develops many aspects to achieve and sustain maximum energy reduction. It explores the need for energy reduction, a framework for achieving sustainable energy reduction and barriers to increasing energy efficiency. Jimbo's worries of a 4 per cent year-on-year energy increase have been unfounded. Analysis of the energy and production data shows that Jimbo has been using specific energy consumption (SEC) as the energy performance indicator. Detailed investigation shows that there is no change in availability, machine performance and good production output. SEC is also very susceptible to computational errors. It may be better to identify an alternative performance indicator. The chapter explores the management aspects of gaining senior management commitment and a management system to ensure long-term energy reduction. It examines the employee manager characteristics necessary to design an energy reduction programme meeting the needs of both the management and the workforce.
