ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the barriers to implementing and sustaining corporate energy reduction programmes. A successful and sustainable energy reduction programme must foster a common understanding between the employees and the management. A good and sustainable energy reduction programme must promote greater understanding within the company by recognising the contributions of each department in a coordinated manner. Continuous conflicting interests can result in cyclic patterns of energy cost to the business and management efforts in reducing energy consumption and cost. When investments are made to train employees in developing and implementing energy reduction programmes, frequently it is the senior management that is selected for detailed training. During the implementation of energy reduction projects from each of the efficiency categories, personal interest and time spent to ensure a good job is performed is inversely proportional to the technical challenges. Many consultants, contractors and equipment suppliers prefer to sell energy reduction projects by implementing black box technologies.
