ABSTRACT
The great Duke fitted a ship, a Tartane and a Frigot, being very well appointed and victualled, disposing of them into the West Indies, and chiefely for the River of the Amazons, appointing Captaine Robert Thornton,4 an Englishman to be chiefe Commaunder of the Ship, the Tartane and the Frigot. Morria is a small low Hand, lying in the River of Amazones, the highest part of the West Indies. This Hand is altogether inhabited by women, having no Mankinde amongst them: they goe altogether naked, using Bow and Arrowes for the killing of their owne foode. From the said river Amazones the said Capitano Thornton coasted Guiana and the island of Trinidada or the Trinity, and had great satisfaction in the accuracy and perfection of the author’s chart. He commenced the voyage from Livorno in the month of September in the year 1608, and returned to the same port of Livorno at the end of June following in 1609.
