ABSTRACT

At a distance of little more than forty leagues from the mouth of the river of the Tapajosos, is that of Curupatuba, which is on the north side of the Amazons, and gives name to the first settlement or village which the Portuguese hold in peace, and subject to their crown. The river Ginipape, according to report, does not promise less treasure. It falls into the river of Amazons on the north side, sixty leagues below the village of Curupatuba. A good fort has to be built on the river on an island 6 leagues from the place called Talpia from whence, it being a narrow place, the passage may be denied to other nations as well as the Castillans who might wish to go that way to relieve their own men.
