ABSTRACT

Gondomar’s sabotage of the Amazon company occurred at a critical juncture in the history of English and Irish settlement on the lower Amazon. Gondomar’s efforts had removed the Amazon Company as a real contender, although some of its servants continued to uphold its claims. The Irish planters on the Tauregue, understandably, seem to have been determined from the first to retain their independence and their relations with the Zeeland traders. The West India Company had moved quickly to rebuild Dutch holdings in the Amazon. Late in 1624 or early 1625 a squadron led by Admiral Lucifer carried out Nicolaes Oudaen at the head of a large number of colonists. If the company of Mandiutuba did retreat to the Okiari, then the smaller settlement fifteen leagues away may have been the Irish settlement on the Tauregue.
