ABSTRACT

Zorzi obtained the information recorded in his second Iter from a certain Brother Zorgi who had left Jerusalem when his monastery there was ruined by the Turks in 1517, and he was in Venice in 1519. Zorzi took the monk to his house and questioned him about his journey from Ethiopia to Jerusalem, made, as we learn from Zorzi’s index, in 1514. Barara, he said, was the metropolis or principal city of Prete Jani, whose name was Davit; it was in the province of Orab, and on the mountain is a castle where abides the Patriarch.
