ABSTRACT

Brother Raphael was a Franciscan who left Jerusalem in 1518 or before, perhaps for the same same reasons as Brother Zorgi. He had already been in Italy for four years when on 1 March 1522 Zorzi discussed with him the problems of Ethiopian topography. Speaking ‘quite good Latin’ the Ethiopian first described a journey between Axum and Barara. The route seems to be the same as that of Iter S, going by Chegefege (Ahia Fej) to Vasel, Fandon and Axon and thence by Suakin to Cairo along the usual pilgrim route (Fig. 14). There is a long description of Axum.
