ABSTRACT

Brother Antonio of Urvuar in Bugna is described, as a Dominican 1 monk, ‘very black with a long beard and long hair and a long and beautiful face’. He was born in Damot and was the ‘companion’ of Brother Thomas of Ganget, but they travelled to Europe by entirely different routes. Brother Thomas, as we have just seen, went from Barara to Jerusalem by Massawa, Suakin and Mount Sinai. Brother Antonio went by sea to India, sailing probably from Zeila, and from India with the Portuguese to Portugal; his evidence was recorded by Zorzi in August 1523 (Fig. 20).
