ABSTRACT

In order to introduce the subject matter of this book, I want to begin with several examples of skillful play in the game of checkers. If you don’t know the rules of checkers (the British refer to the game as “draughts”), you’ll get the basic idea very quickly. The point, however, isn’t to learn the game of checkers, but to get an idea of the type of thing that we’ll be studying. By looking at checkers, we’ll be taking our first look at “reasoning in the wild.”
