ABSTRACT
External EU trade policy is an area in which the EU has played a significant role for some time and therefore provides a template against which to measure other policy areas. This is true for any analysis of EU economic diplomacy as well as in a formal sense in that Art. 218 (TFEU), which sets out general procedures for EU participation in international agreements, is modelled on the treaty provisions and practice developed in the field of trade.
