ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the higher states of consciousness, the apex of human development. It explores many inspiring peak experiences during optimal performance from the studies of world-class performers. The chapter focuses on the higher consciousness as outlined in the ancient Vedic tradition of India, and revived today by Maharishi to get a comprehensive model of advanced dimension of human growth. The Vedic model provided a framework for understanding how an individual can attain sustainable peak performance in a wide range of activities. The study of peak performers exemplifies a selection of important qualities within seven groups of peak experiences: Greatly expanded awareness, everything is right, effortless action, automation in action, restful alertness, improved time management, and frequent luck and good fortune. Abraham Maslow writes that the effect of the transient peak experiences, which often contain an element of surprise or even disbelief, inevitably remains with the person, and may over time result in more lasting plateau experiences.
