ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explores some of the mystery that surrounds, and arguably has become, 'safety culture'. It focuses on ideas and methods that have a plausible scientific explanation for how they can create safety in the workplace. Toolbox talks, employee surveys, suggestion schemes, safety campaigns, posters, stand-downs, procedures, policies, quizzes, checklists, audits and protective equipment inspections have all had their day. Over 200 health and safety leaders of all levels explored the challenges to creating and sustaining an organizational culture that has safety at its heart. The book is for who may be starting out as a safety professional, or as a seasoned practitioner or perhaps someone with an interest in making things safer in the workplace. It guides people, who may have already made good progress with safety, reducing the number of injuries in their organization to an all-time low.
