ABSTRACT

Risk can have a serious impact on an organization, its people and the communities in which it operates. How people identify and respond to risks affect their performance, including safety aspects like their goal of reaching zero accidents. One's approach to risk will also affect how their organizations are viewed in the public eye. Effectively managing risk is therefore at the core of organizational success. Risk really means anything that prevents people from meeting their objectives. It can be typically broken down into three types: operational includes ensuring day-to-day activities; strategic includes the planning and decision-making processes; compliance includes meeting governance and regulatory obligations. In the terms of their profession, people must become energetic advocates and facilitators of Risk Based Decision Making (RBDM). RBDM is a decision-making process by which one can systematically identify hazards, assess the degree of risk and determine the best course of action to achieve the goal with an acceptable level of risk.
