ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the main recommendations to the courts to, civil society, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and experts. Mandatory training in gender competency for all court members. The survivors have to mobilize themselves but it has to start with the institution. Researchers and experts should be encouraged to avoid portraying women as only victims, unwilling to testify, and examine carefully any statements they consider making about rape and sexual violence causing irreparable damage to survivors, and focus on the heterogeneity of survivor experience, the multiplicity of traumas besides rape, and the strength and courage of survivors. Trial Monitoring is essential as cases of sexual violence are seldom treated seriously without outside pressure. Periodic evaluation of effectiveness of capacity building by review of cases and decisions with professional consultants on gender, trauma and violence against women. The Victims and Witnesses Section should create a network of witness support units in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) in cooperation with Social Service Centers.
