ABSTRACT

This chapter explores some of the psychological reactions reported by the informants. The two most common disorders associated with torture and mass violence are Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). According to Brown feminist therapy aims at developing feminist consciousness. Various international and local NGOs as well as women's organisations set up initiatives to support the women survivors. Since 2003, however, many NGO's have withdrawn from Kurdistan and have stopped their work in the region as the exceptional circumstances have ended and there is government in place. Shazadah was already a member of Kurdistan Women's Union and she was an active defender of Anfal surviving women's rights. In the post-1991 era in Kurdistan Anfal survivors became the vehicle of telling the Anfal story. Anfal surviving women talked at length about the aftermath of Anfal in their testimonies.
