ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book looks at how the international system is constructed and at the neoliberal agenda that is progressing beyond our view. It explores the role that transnational corporations, nongovernmental organisations (NGOs) and MEAs currently hold, and how international environmental governance is currently influenced. The book further explores how civil society is already mobilising and discusses how international environmental governance can be tuned to reflect locally conceived and managed wildlife conservation. It is a path that requires considerable behavioural change. Governments need to be prepared to share decision-making and international NGOs need to accept that they must listen to the collective voice of civil society that is already rising up to meet this challenge.
