ABSTRACT

According to St Anselm, God is the greatest being that can be conceived – ‘thatthan-which-a-greater-cannot-be-thought’ – the omni-God: omniscient, omnipotent and omnibenevolent. If God is omniscient, then he knows the meaning of every statement, the content of every thought: he knows that I believe that Miles Davis played the trumpet and that I desire to hear ‘Blue in Green’. If he understands everything, he also understands sinful thoughts: he knows, for example, that Adam lusts for Eve. ‘Shall not God search this out? For he knoweth the secrets of the heart’ (Psalms 44:21).
