ABSTRACT

Sometimes, a sound, smell or taste takes us instantly back to a long-forgotten memory – maybe the smell of soap at school, or a tune that has romantic associations. Perhaps you don't know what triggered the memory – a sight, sound, feeling, smell or taste – or any combination of these. By associating with a past sensory experience, you recall – literally re-experience – the feelings embodied in a memory, as well as the sights, sounds and tactile sensations. We refer to the trigger, or memory stimulus, as an anchor.
