As we write these pages in 2009, the global economy is convulsed by major financial and economic crisis. Recession, depression, instability, unemployment become daily realities. It has to be asked whether the tradition of hospitality from the human past is roadblocked for the foreseeable future. What price the hospitality of St Martin of Tours, giving his cloak to the beggar, in a world of trillion dollar deficits and unimaginably complex financial vehicles?
