ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides insight into a number of areas. Firstly, it looks at what learning transfer actually is. Different perspectives on transfer will be offered, and a framework for understanding these perspectives will be provided. Next, the book examines in more depth what those factors that affect learning transfer, in terms of trainee characteristics, training design factors and work environment characteristics, actually look like in practice, and what the training and development literature has to say about them. It aims primarily at those of you who have responsibility for management of the training, learning and development functions within your organization. The book provides with a comprehensive picture as to how you can make the most of your training and development efforts. The book provides a set of best practice guidelines against which can be measured the proposals of potential suppliers.
