ABSTRACT

Definitions of motivation abound but probably the best way to think about motivation is in terms of what makes people want to put in extra effort, to really give of their best in the interests of achieving something. Perhaps the most important way in which changes in self-efficacy and motivation are enabled is through the feedback process. According to the research evidence, those more motivated to learn, particularly on broader development programmes as opposed to more specific training programmes, are those that see the programme as an opportunity to learn something new and useful. People are chosen to attend training courses for a number of reasons. One of the reasons they can be chosen is that their managers may see development potential in them. The idea behind Personal Development Plans (PDPs) is that they provide a specific development solution based on clearly identified needs, and allow for a range of appropriate development methods.
