ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews 'Southern' and 'Eastern' developmental realms, it enters into the first of the two conventionally acknowledged development worlds, that of the 'North', to be followed by that of the 'West'. The theme of the 'Northern' integral realm is 'reframing knowledge via science, systems and technology'. One of the most helpful introductions into learning in our specific context comes from the American educationist David Kolb, world renowned for the development of his experiential learning theory (ELT), together with his colleague Ron Fry. Kolb's model works on two levels, as he explains in Experiential Learning. A typical way to visualise Kolb's two continua is that the east-west axis depicts the processing continuum, and the north-south axis depicts the perception continuum. According to Integral Research the researcher begins in the centre of the model by reflecting on his or her own personality, his or her burning research issue and desire, specific research context, cultural background, and personal research style.
