ABSTRACT
This chapter highlights the major disintegrating patterns inhibiting successful development from taking place. Someone was thereby confronted with a combination of highly complex issues, the dealing with anyone of them providing us with immense challenges. A new understanding of development needs to engage with these challenges and offer pathways to resolve them in the future. The chapter identifies major disintegrating patterns within development, which, to our mind, can be seen as root causes for the overall failure of conventional development. It also distills significant integration trends that emerged within theory and practice of development. The chapter highlights the identified patterns the disintegrative tension between opposing poles that all of them showcase. It is this dualistic tendency that indeed experience whenever someone operate in development contexts. Many conversations on development get stuck, because individuals or organisations are overly inclined toward one end of the continuum, to the exclusion of the other.
