In each case one new institution has replaced the knowledge based institution that preceded it … Today the laboratory and the research university still stand as the most evolved and overlapping intermeshed institutions of knowledge. But since the central dynamic in the history of knowledge has been for a single institution to supersede its predecessor, the time is ripe for reinvention.
