ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on how innovation can be inspired by ecology and culture (Islam). The linkages between ecology and culture are evident in the rich use of metaphors and analogies in Islamic tradition. Both sources of knowledge in Islam, the Quran and Hadith, promote reflection on the cosmos, nature and human creation. The chapter covers the dimension of integral innovation which is linked to nature, ecosystems or the environment. Inspirations from nature can inform new sustainable business models referred to as eco-innovations. Cleff and Rennings articulated a theory for eco-innovation that is informed by neoclassical and evolutionary notions. Eco-innovations involve all sections of a society in developing new ideas, products and processes which make a transition to sustainability. In sum, eco-innovation can inform new models for transforming the economy, society and business environment. The paradigm of eco-innovation is likely to frame a new discourse for sustainability, infrastructure development, environmental policy, innovation theory, social responsibility, knowledge creation and human security.
