ABSTRACT

Most of the literature on risk control is about corporate processes and systems. By comparison, risk control as a personal skill, something that individual managers can learn about as they develop, is a new frontier. Learning how to use the company's risk management systems is really just continuing with the corporate process theme. To understand more about how people think in situations involving risk and uncertainty the author developed a survey tool called RUMA, which stands for Risk and Uncertainty Management Assessment. It is a relatively new development and in future a lot more will be discovered using this tool. The principles behind RUMA are simply to use scenarios to define situations where erroneous thinking about risk and uncertainty are common. It can also be used to assess an individual's skills, find people suitable for particular roles or projects, and find friends likely to be good candidates for early use of new tools and techniques for risk control.
