ABSTRACT

I have always been interested in how (or if) music analysis could aid a performer in the preparation of an interpretation. In my experience analysing a piece helps me to understand it better, relate to it on a deeper level, memorize it more easily and remember it longer. While I believe that it is possible to learn a piece and perform it well without conscious rigorous analysis, I feel that when I use such analysis my performances are more cogent and have a stronger sense of line and direction.
