ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book is about four pillars of sustainability. It attempts to set the scene for a new paradigm for sustainability that is informed by Islamic worldviews. The motto of the social movements, people wants to change the regime, is the first step in a long journey towards a sustainable human civilization that is guided by a long-awaited justice, inner/outer beauty, social capital and a society without corruption. Being immersed in the work with civil society, donors, international organizations and governments in addressing the sustainability and governance issues in the Middle East enabled the author to see new perspectives of development in action and the trickle down and trickle up effects of development. Clinical economics, as presented by Sachs, need to be applied to address the inequities between the North and the South.
